AMPLIFICATIONS AND CORRECTIONS...

MANILA, PHI (27-Nov). Southeast Asia Games Marathon. According to an account by the
Associated Press, this tiny marathon (only five men and seven women) ended up disqualifying
a Vietmanese male runner for pacing his female teammate who had placed second. Boonchoo
Jandacha of Thailand had won the men's marathon in 2:29:27 seconds, Christabel Martes of
the Philippines the women's gold in 2:47:07. However, the original silver medal winner
in the women's division, Nguyen Thi Hoa, was disqualified when course marshals ruled that
she had been illegally assisted by male runner Nguyen Van Khoa. According to the AP, the
illegal pacing took place about 15 kilometers from the end of the. At that point the men
would normally be well ahead of the women (NOTE: I can't believe a major championship held
the men's and women's marathons together --Ed.). The runners were warned, and after the
race the jury made a unanimous decision to disqualify both athletes. So, Feri Marince
Subnafeu of Indonesia, who crossed the finish line third amongst the women, was promoted
to second place in 2:54:24 and Pa Pa of Myanmar was awarded the bronze in 2:54:56. The
men's silver and bronze medal winners, not affected by the controversy, were Roy Vence
(PHI) in 2:30:11 and Allan Ballester (PHI) in 2:32:25. /MARTY POST/

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, USA (03-Dec). Life Time Fitness Reindeer Run 5-K. This event, which was
not covered in last week's RRW, featured some top athletes representing Team USA Minnesota
(Katie McGregor, Carrie Tollefson, Jenelle Deatherage, Matt Gabrielson, Luke Watson and
Andrew Carson), but was not fully scored. "Because it was snowing and about 9 degrees,
the women on our team ran it as part of a long run," explained team spokesperson, Pat
Goodwin. "In fact they did a TV interview from 8-8:15, then went to Katie's house (Katie,
Carrie and Jenelle) and ran in from there, did the run, and ran back." /PATRICIA GOODWIN/

PUNE, IND (04-Dec). Hutch Pune Int'l Marathon & Half-Marathon. In the women's race, the
5th place women's name is spelled Lene DUUS; the 6th place women, Madhuri GURNULE, is
from India (IND). /HEINRICH HUBBELING/

MACAU (04-Dec). Galaxy Resort Macau International Marathon. The winner of the men's race,
Phillip Bandawe, is from Zimbabwe (ZIM); the 5th place man, Jeremiah Miano Mbogo, is indeed
from Kenya (KEN); the 8th place man, Eusebio Rosa, is from Porgutal (POR). In the women's
race, the 5th place finisher, Kim Kum Ok, is from North Korea (PRK) as is the 6th place
woman, Kim Sun Yong. /RIEL HAUMAN & HEINRICH HUBBELING/

ROMA MARATONA SWITCHES TO NEW TIMING SYSTEM

Organizers of the Maratona della Cittŕ di Roma Trofeo Acea, the largest marathon in Italy,
announced last week that they would be switching to a new timing system next year. In
collaboration with Winning Time, a road race timing service, in 2006 a new type of timing
chip affixed to the bib number will be used. The race plans to have seven intermediate
checkpoints (plus one at the finish) to guard against cheaters.

MARATHON & BEYOND TO PUBLISH BOOK COMMEMORATING 110TH BOSTON MARATHON

Publishers of the book-like magazine, Marathon & Beyond, announced last week the forthcoming
release of a special edition, Boston Marathon & Beyond, commemorating the 110th running of
the BAA Boston Marathon scheduled for Monday, April 17, 2006.

"We believe that this keepsake book will not only celebrate our race's rich history dating
back to 1897, but also convey its continued preeminence in the sport," said Guy Morse,
Executive Director of the BAA, which has officially licensed the book.

The 200-page, 4-color book, edited by Marathon & Beyond editor Richard Benyo, contains articles
by Hal Higdon, Roger Robinson, Kathrine Switzer, Tom Derderian and others. The book will also
feature a double gatefold cover, measuring 9 inches tall by 17 inches wide, painted by
acclaimed artist Andy Yelenak.

"We regard the Boston Marathon as the wellspring from which all other marathons take their
refreshment. This special edition is a perfect opportunity to put a little Boston literary
refreshment into the hands of serious marathoners," said Benyo.

adidas, a BAA Boston Marathon sponsor, will also be a sponsor of the book which will contain
the following articles:

"The Lure and Lore of Boston" by Richard Benyo (a not-so-short history of Boston & why it
is marathon's Mecca)
"The Genesis of Boston" by Tom Derderian (the first Boston Marathon - how it came to be
and how the first race went)
"Boston Lite" by Scott Hubbard (every Boston Marathon in 25 words or less)
"John A. Kelley" by Richard Benyo (the grand master of Boston came up the hard way)
"The Deed is Done" by John J. Kelley (John J. Kelley's 1957 win at Boston)
"Masters at Boston" by Roger Robinson (the pioneering efforts of masters runners at Boston)
"Women at Boston" by Kathrine Switzer (from out of the bushes to the lead pack: a history)
"The Epiphany" by Tito Morales (the spirit of the Boston Marathon waits to infuse the
first-timer)
"The 10 Best Boston Finishes of All-Time" (a stellar panel picks the 10 best Boston finales)
"'Duel in the Sun' Revisited" by Hal Higdon (uncut, long version of Higdon's feature on
Salazar and Beardsley from his book, Boston: A Century of Running. Half of this epic article
will appear in this special issue; the balance to appear in the May/June 2006 issue of
Marathon & Beyond.)

Boston Marathon & Beyond will be distributed to all 2006 Boston Marathon race entrants,
along with Marathon & Beyond subscribers. In addition, it will be available for purchase
by past Boston Marathon entrants and through bookstores and retail running stores. More
information is available at http://www.marathonandbeyond.com/boston2006/.

ROAD RACING...

Honolulu Marathon (33rd)
Honolulu, HI; Sunday, December 11
Distance: 42.195 km, certified out and back course
Entrants: 28,048 in the marathon with 17,345 from Japan
Race & Course Records: Men, 2:11:12, Jimmy Muindi (KEN), 2004; Women, 2:27:33, Lyubov Morgunova (RUS), 2004
Prize Money: See complete details below, including time and record bonuses
Weather: About 70F at start with 68% humidity at 5:00 a.m. start (race is run in darkness for
first 90 minutes)
NOTE: Story by your editor in Honolulu --Ed.

HONOLULU (11-Dec) -- Jimmy Muindi handily defeated all of his rivals today at the 33rd Honolulu
but one: the clock.

Running here for the 12th time, the 32 year-old Kenyan extended his winning streak to three years
and won the world's largest tropical marathon for a record fifth time, crossing the finish line
more than three minutes ahead of the next runner. And although his time of 2:12:00 was the fourth
fastest in the history of the race, Muindi fell 48 seconds short of his primary goal of breaking
his own course record and picking up an additional $10,000 bonus.

"My goal was to attempt to get the course record," said Muindi who ended up running the entire
second half alone in front of more than 28,000 official entrants. "It was very hard for me in
the last four kilometers."

The early pace was a little slow for Muindi's liking, going through the flat 10 km section along
Waikiki Beach in 30:55, about a 2:10:30 pace. Pacemaker Wilberforce Talel seemed to be following
Muindi's lead, more than actually pushing the pace. Muindi ran to Talel's left, doing just as
much work at the front of a pack of eight.

After the ascent of Diamond Head Avenue in the 8th mile, Muindi gently pressed the pace, clicking
off three of the next four miles in under five minutes. Between 12 miles and the half-way mark
(1:05:31), Muindi eased away from the pack and opened up a 20m lead. Eric Nzioki and David Mutua
tried to form a chase, but 40 year-old Mbarak Hussein --a three-time winner here-- knew it was
best to simply let Muindi go. The strength of his move had surprised him.

"These guys are going to pay," Hussein told himself as he watched the others try to go after Muindi.
He quickly changed his own game plan. "I thought I needed to run my own race."

Running alone in the darkness and soaking humidity, Muindi did his best to hold his pace, but in
the final climb up Diamond Head in the 24th mile, he slowed to a 5:17 pace, and the record was gone.
He explained later that although he was feeling good, he wasn't sure where he stood on the pace
because the clock on the lead vehicle directly in front of him wasn't working.

"I was kind of disappointed with the clock on the car," he said looking down for a moment. He then
brightened as his daughter Stella, who turned 11 today, grabbed his hand. "All the same I'm happy."

Behind Muindi, Hussein's decision to hold back turned out to be a wise one. He was able to pass
four other athletes on his way to second place in 2:15:06. Nzioki, his stride labored and a bit
wobbly, held on for third in 2:16:24. It would take nearly seven more minutes before another athlete
finished: Solomon Wachira of Kenya in 2:23:23. Mutua, who later complained of pain in his left
calf, faded to 10th in 2:33:22.

Two of the race's top contenders, Kenyan Joseph Riri and South African Josiah Thugwane, did not
make it to the finish line. It was the second consecutive marathon DNF for Thugwane, the 1996
Olympic Marathon gold medalist, who blacked out after ascending Diamond Head Road in the 8th mile.
He was hospitalized and released.

NURGAILEVA GETS FIRST HONOLULU WIN

Olesya Nurgalieva, the sturdy red haired Russian who finished second at two top ultramarathons
earlier this year in South Africa, overwhelmed the women's field here today, winning her second
career marathon and her first in the United States.

Nurgalieva ran with the pack --which included her twin sister Elena-- for the first five kilometers.
But by the halfway point, Nurgalieva and pacemaker Tatiana Chulakh were alone (1:15:11), and the
2004 Frankfurt Marathon champion cruised home to an easy win. She was actually the eighth athlete
to cross the finish line.

"I can't believe I won!" she exclaimed to reporters through an interpreter sitting in the press
tent after the race. "I never thought I would win."

Her victory was all the more remarkable because it came just five weeks after she set a career
best time at the ING New York City Marathon (2:29:35). She said that despite that effort, she
was well-prepared for today's race.

"We took a great rest and all the conditions were such that we could run well here," she said.

Emerging from the battle behind Nurgaileva to take second place was Eri Hayakawa of Japan, the
2003 Honolulu Marathon champion who was also second here last year. She had been sick for several
days before the race, running a slight fever. Although it hurt her chances today for victory,
it forced her to run at a more moderate pace, which worked to her advantage. She was only in
fifth place as the race moved to the turnaround point in the 16th mile, but she moved past Russians
Elena Nurgalieva, Alevtina Ivanova and defending champion Lyubov Morgunova to cross the finish
line in 2:32:59. Ivanova finished third in 2:38:17 followed by Elena Nurgalieva (2:38:50) and
Morgunova (2:40:47).

The only bad news today for Olesya Nurgalieva was that she did not get the honor of breaking the
finish tape. A man running slightly ahead of her in the finish straight, Junichi Kawabata of Japan,
did not move to the side as the tape was stretched across the center of the finish for Nurgalieva.
He broke the tape instead, one second ahead of the Russian.

Nurgalieva didn't seem to mind, however, and she said she would stay in Honolulu for a few more
days and do some shopping with her $20,000 in prize and bonus money.

"I will buy a nice dress," she said.

CROSS COUNTRY...

SPAR European Cross Country Championships (12th)

MEN'S Race: Sixth Title for Lebed

11 December 2005 – Tilburg, Netherlands – If there was any doubt that Sergey Lebed is the continent’s
King of cross country, he dispelled them immediately after unleashing his now trademark kick en
route to his fifth straight, and sixth overall, European title at the SPAR European Cross Country
Championships.

Despite a 12 second margin of victory over Spaniard Alberto Garcia, Lebed insisted his latest title
was anything but a chore.

“It was a very difficult race,” the 30-year-old Ukrainian said, “one of the toughest I’ve had in a
long time. I just wanted to go out there and be near the front, but not too quickly. And then just
wait for the finishing kick.”

That is precisely what he did. Letting others do the leading, among them Gunther Weidlinger of
Austria and the Spaniards Garcia and Juan Carlos de la Ossa, Lebed held back, deliberately calculating
the precise time to make his move. It came two seconds before the 25:00 minute mark, just after Lebed
and Garcia passed the bell, side-by-side, running stride for stride. He charged on unchallenged for
a 27:09 run over the 9840m course.

“I was concentrating on that precise point, when I would make the move,” said Lebed, who said he
couldn’t underestimate Garcia’s aggressive front-running. “When training, I knew that there would
be some strong Spanish runners here. He’s the European 5000m champion, so of course I had to be
careful of him.”

“It was an intense race,” Lebed continued. “It was very, very hard.” Besides his collection of six
golds –he won his first in 1998—a silver from 2000 and a bronze from 1997, Lebed has the unique
distinction of being the only male athlete to have competed in all 12 editions of the championships.
[Anja Smolders, who was 55th in the women’s race, is the only woman to have competed in all 12.]

For his part, Garcia was never challenged for the runner-up spot, replacing compatriot de la Ossa
as silver medallist.

“Before the race, I though I could beat Lebed today,” Garcia said, “but now I’ll have to wait to
do it next year.” Like Lebed, Garcia’s primary focus for 2006 will be a possible 5000/10,000 double
at the European Championships in Gothenburg.

With a powerful second half performance, Driss Maazouzi of France finished third, repeating his finish
from last year.

“My main goal was to win the team title,” said Maazouzi. “The atmosphere in our team is really good.
So we tried to secure the team title during the race.”

With four runners in the top-ten, France easily took their third straight team title, tallying just
21 points, the second best score ever at these championships. Only Portugal’s 20 point tally at the
inaugural edition in 1994 was better. Garcia and de la Ossa (ninth) led Spain to the runner-up spot
(64 points), with a surprise Ukraine squad taking he bronze with 71 points. Italy, last year’s
silver medallists, were fourth with 75 points.

Junior Race – Bene defends

Last year, Barnabas Bene denied Yevgeny Rybakov a third straight junior title. This year, the
Hungarian teenager duplicated the Russian’s feat with his second consecutive victory.

“It was a good race for me,” said Bene, who edged Andy Vernon of Great Britain by just a second
in 18:41 over the 6.5Km course. “The race was fast, but I managed to have a good sprint finish in the end.”

In a tight contest – 10 runners were within a second of each other with a lap to go—Bene, the European
junior 5000m champion, led for much of the race but didn’t make his decisive move until the waning
stages to break away from Vernon. Dusan Markesevic from Serbia and Montenegro had a strong kick of
his own to nearly overtake Vernon, but fell short by the narrowest of margins. Both were credited
with 18:42 performances.

“I started off well, and got into a good position,” said Vernon. “But I knew that Bene was fast.”

With 60 points, Poland captured the team title, while collecting their first ever junior medal.
Led by Vernon, Great Britain moved up a notch from last year’s finish to take silver with 68 points,
edging Romania’s 71 point tally.

WOMEN - Kiplagat Cruises to Victory

Displaying a brilliant tactical performance, Lornah Kiplagat thrilled the enthusiastic crowd with
her dominating victory at the 12th SPAR European Cross Country Championships, claiming the first-ever
title for the Netherlands.

Making her move about midway through the last lap, Kiplagat pulled away for a 19:55 win over the
6.5Km course, five seconds ahead of Germany’s Sabrina Mockenhaupt. It was the Kenyan-born Kiplagat’s
debut at the continental championships.

“I had to play on some tactics,” said Kiplagat, dismissing a reporter’s suggestion that her victory
was an easy one. “It wasn’t just like snapping my fingers. I had to work hard for it.”

And she did, exhibiting the patience she’s collected as one of the world’s premiere long distance
runners. After Briton Liz Yelling jumped a relatively big lead over the course’s 1490m starting lap,
the field gradually narrowed the margin. Six minutes into the race, Hungary’s Aniko Kalovics led a
fairly tight lead pack, with Kiplagat, Liz Yelling, Mockenhaupt, and defending champion Hayley Yelling
in tow. A little over two minutes later, Kiplagat took a brief lead with Mockenhaupt following. Swede
Johanna Nilsson, who last month took a commanding win at the NCAA championships, gradually caught
the leaders as well, swelling the ranks of podium contenders. After a conservative start of her own,
Olivera Jevtic of Serbia and Montenegro fought her way into contention.

Mockenhaupt jumped to the lead at about the 12:30 point, with Nilsson moving up behind her, but the
pair was unable to shake Kiplagat, who was sitting back, comfortably biding her time, perhaps already
envisioning the hand slaps she would give to fans along the homestretch.

“They counted on me and inspired me,” Kiplagat said of the crowd lining the course. “I wanted to give
something back.”

When Kiplagat made her break, the battle instantly became one for he remaining podium spots. Mockenhaupt
held off the quick-closing Swede to finish second, remarkably, the first ever medal for Germany in
the women’s senior race.

“I’m just really, really happy,” said Mockenhaupt, the German national champion. “It is my first
international medal. It really went well.”

Nilsson, who didn’t decide on whether she would race in Tilburg until a week after her NCAA victory,
said she didn’t really know much about her competitors here, and was merely looking for a top-10 or
top-20 finish.

“I took about a week to decide, and then trained hard for a bit,” said Nilsson, a student at Northern
Arizona University in Flagstaff. “I ran a little conservatively at the beginning, then built on it
towards the end. It felt terrific.”

Jevtic, a four-time bronze medallist who was on the mend from injury prior to this competition, was
fourth in 20:04, 11 seconds clear of Kalovics, a pre-race favorite. Hayley Yelling struggled over the
final kilometre, and finished sixth.

With 52 points, Russia edged Great Britain to capture its third team title, 52 to 54, with France
(73) repeating as bronze medallists. An off day for defending champions Portugal (78 points, fourth)
kept them off the podium for the first time since 1997.

Junior Race – Gun-to-tape win for Bobocel

A front-running strategy for Romania’s Ancuta Bobocel paid off, propelling her to a two-second
victory over Emily Pidgeon of Great Britain. The 18-year-old Bobocel, who was second at these
championships a year ago, jumped to the lead from the gun and stayed there en route to a 15:23
performance over the 4830m course.

“The race went as expected,” said Bobocel, who prepared for the championships at a team high
altitude camp in Pihtra-Arsa. “It was a good race, and I’m very happy.”

Bobocel’s decisive move came about 7:30 into the race, when she produced a surge that opened a
five metre gap on Pidgeon, and defending bronze medallist Marta Romo of Spain. Pidgeon, the
16-year-old European junior champion at 5000 metres, fought on valiantly and gave up no more
ground, but couldn’t make up the deficit either.

“I left a gap and kept it at the same difference,” Pidgeon said. “But I couldn’t close it at
the end.”

Susan Kuijken produced the first Dutch surprise of the day, with a strong finish over the final
kilometre to finish third and claim the first Dutch medal since Gert-Jan Liefers won the inaugural
men’s junior title in 1997. Romo, who turns 18 on Christmas Day, faltered in the waning stages,
and faded to 14th.

Pidgeon, backed up by Morag Maclarty’s sixth place finish and Stephanie Twell’s seventh, cruised
to the team title with 30 points, comfortably ahead of defending champion Romania’s 49. Russia,
with 60 points, repeated as bronze medallist. This was the fourth overall team title for the
British junior women.
